If the rain comes they run and hide their heads

And what's going on in my mathematics blog this past week? Some low-key stuff, such as:

And do you know What's Going On In Prince Valiant? For August - October 2017? Here's your summary! That said, let's look into the Silver Bells in the City parade from last year, from before it ended in a complete state of rain-induced higgledy-piggledy. There was stuff before the chaos.

The setting, early on: the state capitol, with the unlit tree, and the large tree topper that was new this year and possibly was meant to distract from the trees becoming smaller things. (They moved the tree location to a site that for some reason means they need to have smaller trees. I forget why, but it's probably some dopey security-theater thing.)

One of the roughly eight marching bands that made it through the parade route, with lights, and without being poured on.

Float with the Board of Water and Light's big bug costume asking people to stop yelling at them for the ice-storm power outage a couple years back and now how they're cutting huge, ridiculous chunks out of trees at random in the hopes of preventing future downed-branch power outages.

Slightly arty shot of a hand illuminated by the REO Transportation Museum float.

Birb watch. Owl(?) costume character that I don't believe was the mascot for any particular group, but whose presence I therefore can't explain now.

The Capital Area District Library, along with its mascot character, Linc the Creepy Lynx Emoji.

Trivia: Taiwan imported the golden apple snail from Brazil in 1979 in the forlorn hope of starting an escargot industry. The snails also soon escaped and the invasive species began devouring many plants, including rice. Nevertheless the Philippine government asked the US Peace Corps to introduce the apple snail to their country's rice paddies in the early 1980s, again in the hope of starting an escargot industry.
