Time Event
8:28p
Call up and just say hi

Steady rains, which cancelled my plans to see the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (it's said they have pangolins). Just as well; the first day of Spring Break Weekend on Spindizzy was plenty of fun.

My real name is odd; it's only five letters, but Polish, and obscure -- I haven't found a book on Polish family names that lists it -- meaning everyone who reads it mispronounces it, and anyone who only hears it spells it wrong. Makes a good way of separating out telemarketers from people I might talk with. It also means I grew up knowing anyone with my name was a relative, whether in the South/Perth Amboy, Utica, or Detroit enclaves, and I still haven't really internalized that this isn't true for every family.

So today I got an e-mail -- flagged as possibly spam, though the subject line making wordplay with my name showed it couldn't be a spammer; they're not that bright -- from someone wondering if there might be a relation. My family name, sure. From ... South Amboy. Her grandfather's name was ... my great-uncle's. Her great-grandfather's name was ... my great-grandfather's. Father used to work at the butcher shop ... the sign from the (long-closed) family butcher shop is in my father's garage. This is exciting, and I've told my father.

Otherwise ... picked up Looney Tunes: Back In Action on VCD. I saw the movie in the cinemas in November, by accident when other plans fell through. I had expected from the commercials it'd be a horrid, cynical manipulation of beloved characters for a joyless march through the Laws Of Cartoon Physics, with all trace of whimsy and imagination squashed out for a corporate-approved ``Zany? You're Soaking In it!'' script. I couldn't have been more wrong. Everyone who didn't see the movie did themselves a disservice, punishing a good movie for the sins of Space Jam.

Trivia: Today is Foundation Day; it will be on March 14 in the year 12,069 of the Galactic Era that Encyclopedia Foundation Number One establishes itself on the backwater world Terminus. Source: Foundation, Isaac Asimov.
