Down by the Chelsea Piers we rode one of the estimated 500 new carousels opened in the New York City area the past couple years. This one, with a fine view of the great state of New Jersey at the right angle, tries to be populated with animals of the kind which actually lived in the New York City area before it got all built up. |

There are some ingenious bits, such as depicting eels by having them be wrapped around a log, but there are a few points where the native-animals motif breaks down. The most obvious is the inclusion of a unicorn, which anyone knows is native to southern Brazil, but the butterflies depicted as fluttering around it probably are species that could be seen around Manhattan at some point. |
Trivia: Starting 1 April 1901 the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad carried women-only cars on its trains from 7:30 to 9:00 am and 4:30 to 7:00 in the evening. They were discontinued on 1 July, for lack of use. Source: 722 Miles: The Building of the Subways and How They Transformed New York, Clifton Hood.
