There must be passion in the language

The ordinary news: the department approved my request for academic leave to attend a conference in a couple weeks. The baffling part: the approval mentioned that among my responsibilities was to turn in a report on the conference using the attached format to the department chair.

It was a single-page letter, with no format attached.

So I asked the department secretary what format was to be used. She didn't know. She called someone ... who didn't know. They're still working on the question, but for the moment I'm advised I don't need to turn in a report unless someone particularly asks for it. I think they just figured there had to be a specified report formta and referred to it preemptively.
