Don't know when I'll be back again

Flying around the world today. Alas, this means my streak of writing daily may be snapped; it depends how good I feel after the estimated twenty-four thousand hours of flight ahead of me. It feels longer in the air.

There's something odd whereby the TV stations conspire to show stuff I really want to watch the night before I have to fly out. I pretty much always have to take a painfully early morning flight -- I have to take a cab ride in so early I'm hit with the ``after midnight'' surcharge.

Last time I left, they showed Tora! Tora! Tora! -- an exquisite movie, almost elemental tension, masterfully crafted, every element laid down perfectly, the sort of historical movie so hypnotic that it threatens to overwhelm the reality of the events it depicts, and one where if you watch a single scene you realize everybody involved in the movie knew exactly what they were doing and why. I was so annoyed I had to turn it off after an hour.

Last night, another channel showed Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, an example of a different style of movie-making. It'd be easy to go overboard in exaggerating its awfulness, but it is compelling in its own way. And, honestly, I haven't seen it since the theatrical release, so I'd like to better know how it compares to what I remember, which was rather a muddle with flickers of a good movie creeping out of the CGI. Though I doubt anything could change my mind that Anakin is a schlub for going a decade without checking on Mom.

Trivia: The Tax Man was the only principal character in Robert Altman's Popeye not taken from the Thimble Theater comic strip, though many -- not all -- of the extras were Altman's invention. Source: The Popeye Story, Bridget Terry.
