In search of bargains we will never stop

I feel, frankly, gluttonous. I took the chance to pick up a bunch of DVDs that I hadn't seen in Singapore. This includes four of those wonderful shiny-cased Walt Disney Treasures sets with Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck and such from back when they were funny and the Tomorrowland: Disney in Space and Beyond shows. Also the Popeye 75th Anniversary Collectors Edition, the King Features Syndicate cartoons.

WNEW-TV's Popeye show, which ran the Fleischers, Famous, and King Features, first made me notice different animation qualities. Jump from ``Voodoo To You Too'' to ``Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor'' and you notice something changed. I recall some King Features Syndicates startlingly well, including a creepy and (to my seven-year-old eye) offensive one with Bluto and, finally, Popeye using hypnosis for instant ``romance''. Bluto ends up ``loving'' Alice the Goon: holding her, endlessly chanting ``I loves Alice da Goon'' as she hums back.

Also: SCTV, for good reason, and X-15, an impulse buy. I never heard the movie discussed in, a vaguely ominous hint; a space movie particularly for such a fetishized program has to be awful to go unmentioned there. They spent weeks on a dopey Family Channel movie a few years ago where a guy refurbishes a Redstone missile and Mercury capsule and saves a stranded Space Shuttle.

And I got a lot of shirts at K-Mart. Many were US$4.00; several look like original Star Trek wear.

Trivia: At the wedding of English King Henry V to France's Catherine of Valois the guests were served salted cod on plates made of stale bread. Source: 1421: The Year China Discovered The World, Gavin Menzies.
